Let’s talk about scaling your content output…

A new & unique form of “content”

As social media professionals, I think we can all agree on what “social media content” is. It’s your in-feed instagram post, your TikTok post, your Instagram stories, and your tweet (no I will not call it X 🤷). The list goes on and on and on. Pretty straightforward, right?

But what if I told you that your comments are a form of content?

Because it is.

And it’s one of the most underrated forms of content.

Every comment you put out into the world and every post you comment on is an extension of your brand and is a form of social content. This simple perspective change and understanding can completely change the way you view commenting. Because it’s bigger than just responding to a consumer. It’s a form of content.

Your “commenting” strategy - more specifically your outbound community management strategy is essential to grow on social and it has always been a priority for me.

Here are a few benefits of your comments & their impact as a form of content:

  1. Comments are conversational

  2. Humanizes your brand

  3. Showcases the brand tone of voice

  4. No budgetary investment (just requires time & attention)

  5. Effective in reaching new consumers & maximizing awareness

  6. Allows you to hijack & insert your brand into cultural moments

  7. You meet your consumers where they are

  8. Highly scaleable

Here is a perfect example of a comment by the Vegas social team - huge shoutout Bryce Betts and the social team over there! I mean…look at that engagement. 100K likes on a comment is insane 😲.

The Playbook

Comments are content. Now let’s start posting. Here’s your playbook on executing comments as content and how to scale your content output by 10X.

1. Understand Your Consumers

If you do not understand your consumers, then you will struggle to create content and a social experience that will generate results. However, in this exercise I want you to really engage in social listening and understand your consumers on a deeper, more intimate level. I’m challenging you to have an answer to these questions about your consumers:

  • What is their general age range?

  • What does their occupation look like?

  • What do they do in their free time?

  • What do they do with their friends?

  • What are their aspirations?

  • What frustrates them?

  • What does their lifestyle look like?

  • What brands do they align with?

Then once you have all the answers to these questions, you should be able to answer one more question.

  • What are your consumers’ favorite social media accounts?

2. Their Favorite Accounts

Remember that last question? Yeah. That’s going to be helpful here. I want you to create an extensive list of 10-20 social media accounts that you would expect your consumers to engage with and consume content from on a daily basis.

As an example, let’s just say you run social for Nike Basketball. Here are some of the accounts that would be on my list 👇

  • House of Highlights

  • Bleacher Report

  • Kicks

  • Dunk

  • Foot Locker

  • Complex Sports

  • NBA Team accounts (Lakers, Knicks, etc.)

  • And so on…

3. Drop those Comments & Execute

Now is the time to scale…like how I told you earlier. For every single in-feed post you make - I want you to go engage and drop a comment on 10 posts from the accounts that you listed in the previous step.

Just make sure you engage on their most recent post.

This is how you scale your content output…for free. All it takes is time and effort. However, your comments do need to be highly intentional.

Here are a few considerations when commenting on those posts 👇

  • Understand your brand tone of voice and how your brand actually speaks & interacts with others

  • Don’t just comment for the sake of commenting. Add to the conversation. Be memorable. Be conversational.

  • Use GIFS as comments as they take up more real estate and stops the scroll

  • Avoid commenting anything controversial

  • The comments are a great place to drive humor. If you’re a funny brand and it makes sense to have a humorous comment - run it!

4. Analyze & Scale

Everything we do as social media professionals needs to be backed on insights and data. Here’s the opportunity to be data-driven. Ask yourself, what comments were the most effective and generated a lot of likes & comments? What accounts did you see the best engagement on? Were comments with questions the most effective in generating responses and engagements?

Be data driven. Be data inspired. Then take action.
