However, let’s talk social. For today’s topic, we have an interesting one as we are diving into underrated skills that will definitely make your life easier as a social media professional. Pick these up and watch your career path skyrocket.

Let’s get to it.

Social media professionals have such diverse and abundant skillsets as this field requires so much from us. We are community managers, photographers, designers, copywriters. We brief in content to creators, we engage in social listening, we handle trolls in the DM’s, we create content consistently.
We must be data-driven, highly creative, and so much more.
You get it. The list goes on and on.
However, throughout my career and working in social media for 10+ years, I have come to realize that there are more skills that we must pickup to thrive in this space.
Curious to learn more? Here are 3 highly underrated skills that will not only make you a stronger social media professional, but will also accelerate your career and help you move up.
1. The ability to make decks
Yes, the ability make decks. Why you ask? Well because it’s one thing to have a great idea, a social concept, a strategy, a campaign. It’s another to sell it in, get full buy-in, unlock resources, and get other team members and leadership excited.
I truly believe that your ability to create decks is one of the most underrated skills for social media professionals. I find myself making decks constantly, but I have found a way to systemize and templatize decks so it’s just plug and play.
If you have an idea, that’s great. Can you communicate it and speak to it effectively to cross functional team members? This is a whole different ball game. If you want to learn more about developing decks, read this issue.
2. Being “Scrappy”
As social media professionals, it’s imperative to be able to come up with strong social concepts, strategies, and ideas and be able to execute against them. When you have big budgets, this becomes infinitely…easier.
However, one of the most underrated skills a social media professional can have is the ability to be scrappy and make big things happen with little to no budget and resources. At the end of the day, creativity doesn’t have to break the bank. Plus…anything can be captured on your phone as well 🤷♂️
Scrappy social wins.
3. The ability to create systems
Social media can be…chaotic as you may know. We’re jumping on trends one day, the next we are planning a large campaign, and then the next you’re just so stressed out and trying to survive. However, to maintain an always-on presence and keep the social engine running - systems need to be in place.
At the end of the day, your process in developing and posting content needs to be simple across these key steps.
Content Ideation
Content Briefing
Content Creation
Content Edits
Post Copy & Post Approval
Publishing
Community engagement
Social reporting
At the end of the day, there are a lot of steps in just getting one post up across various social channels. It needs to be as clear as day on who is handling what in each step of publishing and creating content.
The ability to create systems and make others’ lives easier through this is highly underrated.
