Let’s get to it.
-Sam
I have worked in social media for 10+ years and have had the privilege of working with some of the coolest brands in the health & fitness industry.
And there’s a lot I love about working in social media.
I love building real relationships with consumers by interacting them through the dm’s. I love copywriting. I especially love slinging some memes.
But my favorite? Developing social media strategies for brands.
I love crafting a brands social DNA, brand personality and tone of voice, channel strategies, content engines, and community strategies - that all come together to create a full and complete social media strategy that drives business growth, brand growth, and community growth.
However, far too many times in my career I have been asked to create a social media strategy out of thin air. With no brand strategy in place. And with no content strategy in place.
That’s a problem.
Because the reality is that social is brand. brand is social. And brand content is social content.
Brand, content, and social all work together.
They shouldn’t be isolated strategies. They should all work in tandem. They should all cross reference each other. If not, like I said - there’s a big problem.
Here’s a visual that should help explain how brand, content, and social work together 👇

So when you begin working on your social media strategy, you should have a deep understanding of your content strategy and your brand strategy. Because your social media strategy is simply an extension of both.
If there’s no brand strategy. Then there’s no content strategy. If there’s no content strategy, there’s no social media strategy.
And a good social media strategy can save a bad content and brand strategy…
But it shouldn’t have to.
So now what? Here' are some key takeaways.
The Takeaways 👇
When you are tasked with crafting social media strategy for a brand, ask for the brand strategy. Review it. Understand it. Get ready to bring it to life.
When you are crafting your social media strategy, ensure that it directly lines up with and cross references the content and brand strategy.
Some brands and marketing leadership team members use “content strategy” and “social media strategy” interchangeably. I have seen this happen a handful of times. When this happens just make sure to over communicate and get a clear understanding on because content can (obviously) extend beyond just organic social.
If your team is planning on revisiting content strategy, force yourself in the room. Social professionals should be involved in every step of the process for social content and strategy development. Social will most likely be the most crucial platform for the content strategy - so you need a seat at the table.
